Aguero debut puts gloss on drab opening weekend

A total of 16 goals we're scored this weekend, an average of 1.6 goals per game for anyone bad with numbers, although if we take out Man Citys mauling of Swansea that average drops to 1.3 goals per game. The season average for 2010/11 was 2.8 goals per game.

It is true that statistics rarely tell the whole story but so let's take a closer look.

Liverpool flattered to deceive, turning in an adequate 45 minutes before allowing Sunderland back into the match for a share of the points. Kenny Dalglish will point to the fact that four of his players we're making their debuts for the Anfield club and hope that better is to come, which it surely is.

Arsenal have been grabbing all the headlines of late, and rarely for the right reasons. The departure of Cesc Fabregas has overshadowed the clubs pre-season and with Udinese awaiting in this weeks Champions League qualifier, there is a fear that Wengers allowing the issue to drag on all summer could derail their season before it has started. Saturdays goalless draw with Newcastle was a frustrating spectacle for Gooners, with Wengers side showing slightly less flair and even fewer teeth that has been the case in recent years.

Chelsea also fought out a goalless draw, with Stoke, although the impressive performance of Fernando Torres provided some cheer. Andre Villas-Boas post-match comments about Stokes physical approach are not something we are used to hearing from a Chelsea manager. Its Arsenal that don't like it up em remember?

Man United did what they do best- enough to take three points without being at their best. West Brom we're unlucky not to take a point, and the game was one of the better spectacles of the opening weekend.

If the weekend fare proved something of a let-down, last nights game at the Etihad Stadium provided some badly needed gloss. Swansea started reasonably well, and City we're sluggish in the opening 20 minutes. The home side soon found their stride, and had rattled the woodwork several times before the interval.

David Silva was at the centre of everything for the home side, with Edin Dzeko looking refreshed and hungry. However, after 59 minutes, and one-nil up, Roberto Mancini did that most uncharacteristic of things: he replaced a midfielder with a striker, and not just any striker.

Nigel De Jong was the man who made way for record signing Sergio Aguero. Mancini had teased us during last weekends Community Shield, and the home crowd was baying for a first glimpse of their, and the Premier Leagues, marquee signing.

To say that he didn't disappoint would be an understatement.

A 30 minute run around, a few nice touches and signs of better to come would probably have sufficed for the home crowd. Aguero wasnt having any of that, for this was an exceptional debut.

For a man playing a debut 30 minutes in a new league, struggling for fitness in pre-season and carrying a weighty 38m price-tag, it was incredible.

Aguero provided two goals, one thrilling assist and enough promise make any doubters think again about Citys prospects this season. It wasnt just his contribution to the final score that impressed.

His movement, the excitement in the crowd that greeted his every touch, that sense that something might happen, all helped. And he looked like he was enjoying it.

Having spent the last season listening to Carlos Tevez moaning about Manchester while pocketing in excess of 200k per week, this is the least City fans deserve.

Its not often Skys hype about a performance is justified, but this time, it is.

The Premier League has a new jewel in it's crown.

Man City are 3/1 to win this years Premier League. Sergio Aguero is 4/1 favourite to finish top scorer.
